Flagstaff P&Z Commission Approves A Zoning Amendment Regarding Affordable Housing
The Flagstaff Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend the City Council approve an amendment to the zoning code to modify development standards for affordable housing. The two main standards discussed were to allow for less than one parking space per dwelling unit and requiring that an affordable housing development with 100-percent affordable units has similar quality to an ordinary market rate development. The standards would not allow modifications to aspects such as building height and outdoor lighting requirements. Commissioners Carole Mandino and Eric Nolan expressed concerns about allowing for fewer or even zero parking spaces, but Zoning Code Manager Daniel Symer said it would not be an absolute right. Symer noted the code amendment details standards that would have to be met in order for council to approve a parking reduction, such as close proximity to a transit stop.
OVER the past couple of weeks we have learned much about Barcroft, a large house in Blackburn which was owned by the Scapa company and was used to entertain important visitors to the factory. Looking Back reader Eric Nolan who has a keen interest in local history is in possession of the diaries of James Hargreaves, the wealthy Tobacco Factor who bought the fine house in 1904 from the town clerk of Blackburn, Mr M R Fox. The diary entries provide a fascinating insight into the world of one of Blackburn’s wealthy merchants. The first mention of Barcroft occurs in a diary entry from Christmas Eve, 1903.
Ice Cream Nachos
How do nachos, the world’s most perfect mountain of food, get even better? Make them dessert and add ice cream. Carl Gordon of
Gordon’s Milkshake Bar (865 Massachusetts Ave., 317-453-1360) toasts tortilla strips and coats them in cinnamon and sugar before adding seasonal flavors and fresh ice cream (made by the Gordon’s team in a facility not far from the milkshake shop). Stewed sweet potatoes and marshmallows topped with cheesecake ice cream have a fall feel; fresh strawberries with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream recall a summer vibe. Get creative with your own favorite flavors, and remember: Ain’t no mountain high enough.
