LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The operators of the Westfield Century City mall lost a round in court today in a lawsuit brought on behalf of three young children of a man fatally shot outside a restaurant at the shopping center when a judge declined a motion to put the case on hold pending the outcome of the accused killer s criminal case.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Edward B. Moreton had issued a tentative ruling granting the motion brought on behalf of Century City Mall LLC, but reversed himself after hearing arguments. He said his decision was “without prejudice, meaning the mall s operator can bring the motion for hearing again later.

INGLEWOOD (CNS) - A man and woman were killed when a suspected impaired driver being chased by authorities crashed into their vehicle in Inglewood, authorities said this morning.
Officers saw a blue Dodge pickup truck speeding and running a red light on Century Boulevard near the San Diego (405) Freeway at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, then the driver got on the northbound San Diego Freeway and officers tried to pull the truck over, but the driver fled, California Highway Patrol Officer Franco Pepi told NBC4 Thursday morning.
The suspect exited the freeway at Manchester Avenue and led officers on a pursuit on Inglewood streets, eventually turning north on Glasgow Avenue and crashing into a sedan traveling eastbound on Olive Street, Pepi said.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Arraignment is set today for a former Catholic priest who is charged with lewd acts on four boys at two parishes in Palmdale and Redondo Beach between the mid-1990s and 2001.
Christopher John Cunningham, 58, was charged April 2 with a dozen felony counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney s Office.
Cunningham was an associate pastor at Saint Mary s Catholic Church in Palmdale and worked at Saint Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach at the time of the alleged crimes.

SANTA ANA (CNS) - Orange County has reported just 73 new COVID-19 cases and five more fatalities, most of which date back to February, as hospitalization rates inched downward.
The new cases Wednesday pushed the county s total to 253,737 since the pandemic began, while the death toll rose to 4,944.
The number of COVID-19 patients in county hospitals decreased from 128 Tuesday to 125, while the number of intensive care unit patients dropped from 27 to 24.
Orange County s weekly averages for COVID-19 metrics, which are released on Tuesdays, kept it in the orange tier of the state s economic reopening system, although it meets two of three categories for the least-restrictive yellow tier, according to most recent figures.

US-JUSTICE-THEFT
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A senior member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department s leadership ranks has announced his intention to run against Sheriff Alex Villanueva in 2022.
Eliezer Vera is chief of the department s Technology and Support Division, and has been with the LASD since 1988.
He criticized Villanueva for how the sheriff has handled disagreements since his election in 2018.
“I believe as law enforcement officers our mission is to bring calmness and civility and peace to very difficult situations. And what we ve witnessed from the current sheriff is someone that when someone disagrees with him, we see nothing but utter disdain and contempt, Vera said as he announced his candidacy Wednesday morning in Grand Park, surrounded by his wife, children, mother and grandchildren.
