Here s why twice-weekly testing will help protect us all

18:59 EDT, 6 May 2021 76 shares With Covid cases dropping and life beginning to open up once more, it’s tempting to think we’ve finally beaten the virus. But even though we’ve got fantastic vaccines, they’re not the entire answer to the problem – not everyone has yet had the jab, and none of them currently offer 100 per cent protection. However, we do have another brilliant weapon in our arsenal – rapid testing. Not only does this give a result in just 30 minutes, it can pick up the around one-in-three cases in which people don’t show any symptoms. It’s vital these are detected to prevent people unknowingly spreading the virus.

Emma has had her hair shaved off to boost a fighting fund she set up with her sister Leanne to raise funds for mum Suzy Hinds’ treatment in the United States. Emma, 28, and Leanne, 31, are chasing a target of £50,000. Emma, who lives in Jerrard Close and works as a project co-ordinator for digital services provider Cosmic on Heathpark in Honiton, decided she would have her hair cut off in solidarity with her mum.

She said: “Mum has three lots of different chemotherapy drugs every third week and it takes six hours for the treatment to get into her system. Because the drugs are stronger mum has been told she will lose her hair. She is feeling really poorly.  “So I’m going to shave my hair off. It is quite scary for me but I can’t imagine what my mum is going to go through. It has been a big struggle for all of us. We don’t have any idea how much it will cost at the moment – and Covid means I can’t travel to America to be with her. The last time I saw her was three years ago. Jerry, my step-dad, the love of mum’s life, is struggling because he is worrying about the financial burden.”

Great British Getaways: 10 summer breaks in East Anglia to book now (before they sell out)

Expect seals, birds and big beaches Vast beaches, big skies and open countryside. East Anglia is the perfect antidote to months of claustrophobic lockdown. That’s why last summer saw the floodgates open as the holidaying crowds poured into the coastal and inland enclaves of Norfolk and Suffolk. Hotel rooms were full, beach car parks were packed and self-catering cottages in quiet, rural villages saw back-to-back bookings throughout the season. This year looks set to be no different. For James Player, owner of Norfolk’s Blakeney Cottage Company (blakeneycottagecompany.co.uk), the start of 2021 has been the busiest ever for summer bookings. His 160-strong portfolio of properties is already 99 per cent booked for July and August. Martin Wickham of Original Cottages (originalcottages.co.uk) says Suffolk is also in high demand with peak week bookings already 70 per cent higher than this time last year, and coastal villages such as Walberswick and Orford bordering on full occupancy.
