Gold Key – Hotel Upper Midscale
The Highlights: Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta on a site that was home to a First Methodist Church in the 1800s, the Candler Hotel is a nod to the city’s rich industrial history and craftsmanship. Originally built in 1906 by Coca-Cola founder Asa Griggs Candler, the Candler Building was the city’s tallest for many decades. The design team drew inspiration from local flora and fauna while incorporating elements of marble, brass, and custom oak parquet wood floors to build upon the idea of southern hospitality. Upon entry, the eye immediately draws to the building’s original marble columns, grand staircase, and friezes that are paired with ornate Tiffany glass windows and chandeliers.

The Drinks Business, the stimulating wine drink initially had the approval of everyone from U.S. presidents to Catholic popes. One such wine was made by a Civil War vet named John Pemberton, who had cooked up his brain tonic as a means to kick the nasty morphine habit he d picked up after being injured in the war. His Pemberton s French Wine Coca also contained an extract of the African kola nut, which is chock-full of caffeine, just to give the cocaine a little kick.
