Fossil fuel trade groups in Louisiana and New Mexico rallied Democratic governors in opposition to President Joe Biden’s executive order pausing new oil and gas leasing on federal lands and in offshore waters, newly released emails show.  The Biden administration paused new leases on Jan. 27 and launched a major review of the federal oil and gas leasing program. Interior Department officials have said the program currently is “not serving the American public well.”

(Courtesy of NM State Land Office) Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal The New Mexico State Land Office is suing two oil and gas companies for failing to clean up abandoned wells and other infrastructure on more than 500 acres in McKinley County. The lawsuit filed Thursday in 1st Judicial District Court states that BC&D Operating and Dominion Production Co. did not “plug wells, remediate spills, remove debris” or reclaim roads and well pads after their leases expired in 2018.

Lujan Grisham touts New Mexico s progress during Climate Change Summit

New Mexico’s efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, namely from its oil and gas extraction industry, was discussed on the global level as the administration of President Joe Biden convened an international climate change summit Thursday on Earth Day. The virtual summit included at least 40 world leaders and was planned to continue into the following day as leaders discussed the need for a worldwide strategy to fight pollution and reduce man-made impacts such as global warming that many feared could devastate the environment and ecological balance of the Earth. Biden was expected to unveil a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 and use the event to solicit advise and collaboration from world leaders to achieve such a target.
