WilmingtonBiz Talk: The start of hurricane season

On the heels of an active season last year and forecasters’ prediction for another above-average season during the months ahead, this week’s WilmingtonBiz Talk was a talk with the area’s top emergency officials on preparations. The panel was Tommy Batson, Pender County’s emergency management director; Edward Conrow, Brunswick County’s emergency services director; and Steven Still, New Hanover County’s emergency management director. They discussed lessons learned since Hurricane Florence devastated the region in 2018, precautions against another major (or even) minor storm, and individuals and businesses can prepare.

Brunswick County EMS works to keep up with population growth

Brunswick County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, and its emergency services is working hard to keep up with that growth. In 2017, the StarNews reported that Brunswick County EMS was in need of additional ambulances to keep up with the population growth. Four years later, the population is still growing rapidly right alongside the nationwide shortage of health care professionals. Edward Conrow, the Brunswick County EMS director for two years with more than 30 years of EMS experience said, Nationwide, everyone is going through the same thing. We are always working to keep a full staff, and I don t think that s unique to anybody (working in similar fields).

Brunswick tornado: Prepare for severe storms, update systems

Wilmington StarNews The tornado that devastated communities in southeastern Brunswick County late Monday left residents with little time to prepare. Carol Phillips said she didn t have time to reach her mother in another part of the house as debris began flying through her home s windows. Theah DiSpirito and her family huddled in a hallway bathroom to ride out the storm. Janet Poremski said she received a tornado alert, but by the time it came through the tornado had already hit and moved on. Others say they weren t notified at all. Inconsistent alert systems A late-night phone call from her daughter in New York alerted Darla Tonkin to the tornado wreaking havoc just miles away from her Shallotte home.
