The address, which was shared virtually both via Zoom and on the city’s cable channels, began with introductory remarks by Edmonds restaurateur Shubert Ho. He acknowledged the impacts of COVID-19 on the community, and also on his business which “pivoted” to outdoor dining and takeout and his family. “My wife’s a teacher in the Edmonds School District, so her world drastically changed, as did the day-to-day experience for our two school-age daughters,” Ho said.

Council agrees to extend Lawless acting police chief appointment during national search

The Edmonds City Council during its Tuesday night business meeting unanimously extended the appointment of Acting Police Chief Jim Lawless for an additional six months while the city conducts a new national search for a police chief. A long-time assistant chief, Lawless was appointed acting chief a year ago. Without the council’s action, his appointment would have expired Jan. 22. During a previous search, Lawless was one of two finalists for the permanent chief position that Mayor Mike Nelson ultimately offered to another candidate Sauk Suiattle Tribal Chief Sherman Pruitt but that offer approved by the city council on a 4-3 vote was withdrawn after discrepancies were discovered. Lawless announced last Thursday, Jan. 14, that he wouldn’t be applying again.

Edmonds Arts Commission seeks visual teaching artist

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: December 21, 2020 379 TheEdmonds Arts Commission is looking for an experienced visual teaching artist to script and create one 10-minute instructional video for 3rd Grade students (ages 8-10) on design elements that are important in making an eye-catching poster. It should include the basics of visual art and graphic design to assist in their effort to create a poster of a favorite book. Compensation is $400. Video needs to be formatted in the most recent version of mp4. Interested artists should have proven experience as a visual artist or graphic designer with art instruction experience. Candidates with proven experience in primary education student learning and with distance learning and/or experience with recording an instructional presentation will receive principal consideration.

City of Edmonds Arts Commission offering 2021 grant opportunities for artists, nonprofits

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: December 19, 2020 397 The City of Edmonds Arts Commission will offer two single opportunity grants in early January for artists and nonprofit arts and culture organizations based in Edmonds. Applications will be available after the City 2021 Operating Budget is approved (December 2020). The application deadline will be in late January 2021. Projects must be completed in 2021. The Small Grant Program will have a total of $5,000 available for small grants of $100 – $1,000 for arts-based projects to support creativity, diversity, and access to arts in Edmonds through literary, visual, or performing arts. Creating a Future grant program has a total of $50,000 available for awards between $1,000 and $10,000. The purpose of this grant opportunity is to help build and reinforce a diverse and equitable cultural community in Edmonds, recognizing the uncertainty and challenges the COVID-19 pandemic directives, and the necessity of changing strategies to c
