A freezing rain warning in effect for the city of Edmonton and area has been lifted.
Forecasters are still calling for gusty winds of 50-70 km/h this morning and some 2-4 cm of snow. By 2 p.m. the snow is expected to taper off and things should actually clear up later tonight. Temperatures will hover around the 0 C mark for the majority of the night and into tomorrow. By Friday, we’re back above zero with a high of 4 C and 3 C Saturday. We might see some more rain and/or snow flurries Sunday.
To the north, winter storm warnings are still in effect for Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche, Westlock, Barrhead, and Athabasca. Those areas could see anywhere from 10-20 cm of snow on top of 5 mm of ice build-up in areas near and south of Cold Lake.

EDMONTON Local ice climbers won’t have to drive all the way to Jasper to use their crampons and ice picks. Freezing has begun on the new ice wall at the Edmonton Ski Club. Working with the Alpine Club of Canada, the slow process of making a three-storey ice climbing wall will give the ski club a unique attraction around the second week of January. “The scaffolding you see actually supports a belay bar, that belay bar holds up a rope that supports a climber. The ice structure will be in the middle, the ice will be free standing and what people will be able to do is use specialized equipment such as an ice axe and crampons and they’ll be able to climb up the ice,” said Adam Luciuk of the Edmonton Ski Club.

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when Murphy and I went to take out the garbage and I felt nary a chill in the air. Dawning a Hockey Night in Canada t-shirt, I dragged the garbage bin to the curb while Murphy did his thing, smelling every nook and cranny he could. For a moment I just stopped, and took in the silence of the street. No wind, no sound, nadda. After a week of temperatures in the mid-teens and -20 wind chills, standing outside in a t-shirt in -5 C felt oddly satisfying. You can tell I’ve lived here my entire life, can’t you?
