At the same time as the 2019 local election, Limerick people voted in favour of a new directly elected mayor with a five-year term. Government are keen to set the plans in motion, and have targetted the autumn for an election, with the first term set to be just two-and-a-half years. This is one of the reasons Cappamore-Kilmallock councillors Gerald Mitchell, PJ Carey, Mike Donegan, John Egan, Eddie Ryan, Martin Ryan and Brigid Teefy all put their names on a motion asking for it to be deferred until 2024.

The suspect, who was already in custody over a separate matter, was detained on foot of a warrant issued by a District Court judge over the slaying of crime boss Kieran Keane and the attempted murder of his nephew Owen Treacy. 2 2 Gardai are expected to charge the man following his arrest today The pair were abducted by members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang and brought to a lonely rural road outside Limerick where Keane was shot in the head and Treacy was stabbed 17 times, but miraculously survived after playing dead.

Man arrested in connection with 17 year old murder of Limerick crime boss

Gardaí in Limerick have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Limerick crime boss Kieran Keane and the attempted murder of his nephew Owen Treacy, 17 years ago. A Garda spokeswoman said “gardai investigating the murder of a male and the attempted murder of a second male at Drombanna, Co. Limerick on 29th January 2003 have this morning arrested a male, in his early 40’s, in connection with their ongoing investigation”. “The male was arrested this morning under a warrant issued by a Judge of the District Court and was brought to Roxboro Road Garda Station, Limerick, where he is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1999.”
