Alex Ferguson excelled at Manchester United, but his true greatness shone in Aberdeen

Alex Ferguson excelled at Manchester United, but his true greatness shone in Aberdeen © Supplied Sir Alex Ferguson achieved the impossible with Aberdeen and Manchester United during a glittering career. Sir Alex Ferguson and sentimentality tend to go together like Boris Johnson and a comb, but there was something heart-rending about the trailer for the former manager’s new film Never Give In. The documentary, which chronicles the Scot’s myriad triumphs in football, and also illustrates how close he came to death after suffering a brain haemmorhage two years ago, will hit cinemas at the end of May and, as you might expect, most of the focus will be on his achievements at Manchester United, whom he transformed from a club living on past glories to the powerhouses of the English Premiership, during his 26 years as manager.

Readers letters: Pittodrie needs total clear-out

By Readers Letters 29/04/2021, 11:55 am My love affair with Aberdeen FC began in 1947 and has passionately continued for 74 years. However the current “team” is surely the most awful I have ever seen wearing Aberdeen jerseys. In the 1940s, goals flowed from Hamilton, Williams and Baird. In the Dons team of the 1950s it was even greater with goals coming from all over the park thanks to Buckley, Yorston and Leggat. Then in the 1960s under the great Eddie Turnbull we had Harper, Jarvie, Robb and Forrest. Things got even better under Ferguson with McGhee, Black and Weir. There is no doubt, however, that things started going backwards with the arrival of Porterfield, Paterson and Miller (Alex).

EYEWITNESS: King Joey s goals remain unforgettable 40 years after he left Pittodrie

© DCT Media Joe Harper remains a legend at Pittodrie although he famously did not see eye to eye with Alex Ferguson. Joe Harper has never been a man for taking the conventional route – even when it led him into scrapes and confrontations. On his international debut, against Denmark in 1972, he was originally listed as a substitute by Tommy Docherty who added that he wouldn’t be leaving the bench. But then, after being told to get ready to take the field with 30 minutes left, he realised that he needed the toilet, went searching for the WCs in the corridors of a foreign arena, opened the wrong door….and suddenly found himself locked out on the street.

EYEWITNESS: He s still an Aberdeen great 50 years after Manchester United s Martin Buchan made his Scotland debut

When Dons supporters sit down and talk about the best talent to emerge from the city, Denis Law is usually at the top of the list – but while he was unquestionably a stellar performer, the Lawman left the Granite City without ever gracing the Pittodrie turf.
