THUNDER BAY Thunder Bay Airport will benefit significantly from a new federal relief program for the country s medium-sized airports.
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra has announced a temporary expansion of the Airports Capital Assistance Program to support critical infrastructure improvements at airports that had passenger volumes of less than one million in 2019.
Thunder Bay Airport has been allocated up to $13 million.
President and CEO Ed Schmidtke says it will facilitate major airfield infrastructure work in the summer of 2022.
The government will match the airport s own expenditures on a number of projects estimated to have a total cost of up to $26 million.

Sunwing has announced its returning to Thunder Bay for the 16th straight year with vacation packages to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Flights will begin in December and will run weekly until the middle of April 2022.
Airport President and CEO Ed Schmidtke says they are very excited to have the service return and appreciate Sunwing’s confidence in the regional market after a difficult year for the travel industry.
He adds they are hopeful for a successful winter season.

THUNDER BAY – If international travel is a thing by the time the snow falls again, Sunwing says it plans to offer direct flights to the sunny south out of Thunder Bay for the 16th straight year.
The airline on Tuesday announced it plans to offer vacation packages to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, starting in December.
Weekly flights to the tropical destinations will continue through April 2022.
“Supporting local regional airports and providing Canadians across the country with more convenient ways to travel has always been important to us here at Sunwing,” said Andrew Dawson, president of tour operations for the airline.
