York County commissioners say a surge in voters caused the ballot shortage at some polling locations on Tuesday.A record number of voters – especially Republicans – turned out at the polls for the primary election. It was more than the total number of people that voted in 2019 primaries, Commissioner Julie Wheeler said.At least a dozen polling places ran out of paper ballots.Wheeler said the county followed a state statute for printing ballots based on the highest number of voters in the last three municipal primaries plus 10%. That s not to say that planning couldn t have been better. We certainly know that we had an issue yesterday, Wheeler said.According to commissioners, the problem was compounded when some individuals voted in person after receiving a mail-in ballot.Commissioners said they will look at the root causes of the ballot shortage to make sure it doesn t happen again. Harrisburg International Airport is expecting to see an increase in travel as the Memorial Day holiday approaches, and passengers can expect some changes.
York officers have made what the police commissioner calls a significant gun seizure.Police said they found a small arsenal Tuesday during a search of a home in the 900 block of South Pine Street. Heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana were also found, police said.The guns include three .40 caliber Glock pistols. One of the pistols was reported stolen, police said.Police also found a loaded AK-47 rifle. Thankfully, rifles like that on the street aren t common, so our officers have been picking up rounds consistent with rounds being fired out of that weapon for months now. We ve been chasing it like a ghost around the community, trying to get ahold of it, Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow said.There has been a recent spike in gun violence in York. Seven people have been shot over the last seven days, and one of the victims died.
