CANASTOTA, N.Y. (AP) The boxing ring in New York City’s Madison Square Garden where the Fight of the Century was staged 50 years ago Monday is the centerpiece of the Boxing Hall of Fame in upstate New York, and it s on permanent display. Executive director Ed Brophy says it’s been a treasured piece enjoyed each year by returning Hall of Famers. On March 8, 1971, the first Ali-Frazier fight proved one for the ages, with Frazier scoring a unanimous 15-round decision. Brophy says the ring was initially installed in the first Madison Square Garden in 1922 and was transported north to the Hall of Fame in 2007.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame joins the worldwide boxing community in mourning the loss of 1972 and 1976 Olympian Davey Armstrong, who passed away on Monday (Feb. 8th) in his hometown of Puyallup, WA. He was 64 years old.
“The Hall of Fame joins the boxing community in mourning the passing of U.S. Olympian Davey Armstrong,” said Hall director Ed Brophy. “We offer our condolences to his family.”
Armstrong boxed out of the Tacoma Boys Club and won multiple National AAU championships and competed in both the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. As a professional (1980-83), he fought out of the famous Kronk Gym and compiled a 24-3 (14 KOs) record.
The past few days have been anything but pleasant at The International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota. We re all a little saddened with the passing of a legendary boxer and the cancellation of the annual Hall of Fame Weekend.
Both blows came within the last week. First, the boxing shrine announced the postponement of Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies for the second straight year. The follow-up came with the passing of Leon Spinks.
Spinks died this past Friday, (2/5), following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a frequent visitor to Canastota during Induction Weekend ceremonies. Hall director Ed Brophy called him a colorful personality, always willing to take time for a photo or autograph request.
