Eighty-six people have died in various accidents that happened across Edo State between January and June this year.
The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Henry Benamaisia, gave the figure yesterday in Benin in an interview with our reporter on the crashes within the period under review.
He said “a total of 717 persons were involved in the accidents that happened in the state and that 85 died while 279 were injured.
“Twenty-four persons died in the month of January, 13 died in February, 14 in March, 19 in April, four in May while 11 died in June bringing the total number of deaths recorded in the period under review to 85”.

He said “1,718 persons were involved in the 252 crashes, 179 died while 608 sustained various degrees of injuries,”
The sector commander attributed the accident to dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, route violation and driving under the influence of alcohol among others.
He explained that in 2021, the command has stepped up public enlightenment and enforcement, as they discovered that without enforcement, road users would continue to flout traffic rules.
“We have sensitized the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employer’s Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and motor park managers in the state to stop the sale of alcohol in motor parks,”
“We have discovered that most of the accidents happened on the highways and we have increased our visibility on them in order to reduce crashes on the road,”

No fewer than 15 persons on Friday lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Edo State, officials have said.
One of the accidents involved a Mercedes Benz which rammed into six children who were playing football in a compound in Arue, Uromi in Esan North-East Local Government Area, while trying to dodge a pothole.
The other accident, which claimed nine lives, involved four vehicles in the Agbede axis of the Benin-Auchi Road.

Five passengers lost their lives and several others were injured in a road crash that occurred on Thursday along the Benin-Ekpoma-Abuja Road in Edo State.
The accident, which occurred around 11.30am near Obagie community in the Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state, involved an 18-passenger commercial bus, an articulated vehicle and a Toyota Sienna.
It was gathered that the bus was heading for Ekpoma and was trying to avoid a pothole when it suddenly had a head-on collision with an oncoming a truck laden with baskets of tomatoes.
A passenger, who was in the Toyota Sienna, stated that their vehicle narrowly escaped the carnage.
