You may not recognize Ruth E. Carterâs name, but you likely recognize the costumes sheâs designed. Theyâre featured in a dozen Spike Lee films, including âDo the Right Thingâ (1989) and âMalcolm Xâ (1992). The latter was her first Oscar nomination. Theyâre in Steven Spielbergâs âAmistadâ (1997), her second nomination. Her third was for âBlack Pantherâ (2018), for which she became the first Black person to win a best costume Oscar.
