Yesterday in his Budget the chancellor gave the go-ahead for Freeport East, a tax-free port in East Anglia. Here is everything you need to know.
What is Freeport East?
Freeport East is the plan for a tax-free port centred around Felixstowe and Harwich. But it will affect other areas of the region.
The Freeport East bid is focussed on Bathside Bay at Harwich and the Port of Felixstowe Logistics Park but includes proposals for tax and customs sites inland.
These sites include the planned new development at Gateway 14 near Stowmarket and Port One in Great Blakenham.

UK – One of the major disadvantages of Britain s east coast ports has always been the weather. The storms which sweep in from across the North Sea often hold up operations while the more sheltered facilities in places such as the River Thames can work on uninterrupted.
Now however it seems those easterly gales are being looked to for a source of new income by the partners involved in touting their application for a new Freeport East which centres on the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich. George Kieffer, Chairman of the Freeport East Project Board, explained:

Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from central government to organisations, such as Tendring Council and Essex County Councils plan and fund public services. Census outputs inform where billions of pounds of public funding is spent on services like transport, education and health - on cycle routes, schools and dental surgeries.
