REVEALED: Violent crime has surged in Minneapolis in the year since George Floyd s death, with the second highest number of homicides EVER as the pandemic and protests
Of the 5,426 violent crimes recorded in Minneapolis last year, 83 of them were homicides, according to the city s police crime statistic data
It is only the second highest number of homicides since 1995 when a record 97 homicides were recorded
That record 1995 figure resulted in the city being branded Murderapolis by national media
Violent crime was already trending upward in the first half of 2020 but really spiked after Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin
Keith Ellison filed the memorandum with the judge on Friday
He listed five aggravating factors the state believes warrant a harsh sentence
Ellison referenced the particular cruelty of Floyd s death, as well as the presence of children among other aggravating factors
Chauvin is facing up to 40 years in prison, though sentencing guidelines suggest he is more likely to receive in the range of 10-15 years
Chauvin is currently in Oak Park Heights prison - Minnesota s only maximum security facility
The former Minnesota cop is set to be sentenced in Floyd s death on June 16
