The number of Covid-19 recoveries continues to decline as the total of the active case increase in Gauteng, the Northern Cape and the Free State.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize reveals the latest data in his daily Covid-19 statement that was released on Monday evening.
Gauteng has 11 108 active cases, followed by 7 940 in the Northern Cape and the Free State with 7 166.
The cumulative recoveries now stand at 1 541 250 representing a recovery rate of 94,1%, says Mkhize.
The minister says a further 72 people passed away due to Covid-19 related complications which brings the total number of deaths to 55 874.
Foreign student trampled, gored by rhino in Zululand Updated

A foreign student is in a critical condition after he was tramped and gored by a Black rhino in Northern Zululand.

Apparently, the game ranger student was walking on a private reserve on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
IPSS Medical responded to the incident.
Spokesperson Paul Herbst says the Scottish student was trampled and gored by the rhino. A search and rescue operation by IPSS Search and Rescue as well as anti-poaching units in the area. The student was located and preparations for evacuation were initiated.
Inanda man jailed for life for raping stepdaughter Updated

A 46-year-old Inanda man is to spend the rest of his life behind bars for the rape of his stepdaughter.

He was sentenced by the Ntuzuma Regional Court.
The court heard that the girl, who was 10 when she was attacked, lived with her mother and her stepfather.
The NPA s Natasha Kara says the child garnered enough strength to report the matter when she was 12. The incident eventually came to light when the child confided with her school friend who then told a school teacher. The NPA welcomed this successful prosecution. The accused was in a position of trust, yet he chose to be the abuser of the child rather than her protector. We hope this sentence serves as a deterrent to the like-minded individuals.

Gauteng has the highest number of active cases at over 8 000, followed by the Northern Cape at 6 200 and the Free State at almost 6 000. The total vaccinated under the Sisonke Programme is 479 768. These vaccinations were with the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine and are therefore completed vaccinations. The total vaccinated in Phase Two to date is 39 371. These vaccinations were with the first dose of Pfizer vaccine, the department said in a statement.

Former National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete has defended the 5th Parliament s alleged lack of action when allegations of state capture emerged.

She appeared before the State Capture Commission on Tuesday.
The evidence leader asked her why not a single portfolio committee adhered to initial requests to look into claims of corruption within government.
Mbete says at that time, there was no concrete information. In March 2016, MP s were very busy. It can not be argued that they were sitting around, they had all the time and consciousness and the awareness and the understanding of everything what was going on and they didn t do anything about it.
