Blame the pandemic.
The Lewiston school nutrition program expects to lose tens of thousands of dollars in federal reimbursement because it served fewer meals this year.
“There’s an interesting trend in Maine and across the country,” said Alisa Roman, nutrition program director for Lewiston Public Schools and president of the Maine School Nutrition Association.
“Schools are scrambling, ‘Oh my goodness, what are we going to do?’” she said in a recent phone interview. “It will definitely be a challenge for most.”
Other districts including those based in Poland, Farmington, Rumford and Paris also expect less money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which fully or partially funds school meals.

HESSCO Elder Services in Sharon is once again partnering with Mick Morgan’s Irish Pub for the ninth annual Mick Morgan’s St. Patrick’s 5K for HESSCO on March 14.
This is HESSCO’s largest fundraiser and coincides with the national March for Meals Campaign which mobilizes hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build support, an opportunity to shed light on HESSCO’s Nutrition Program. With the assistance of nearly 700 volunteers, HESSCO packages and delivers an average of 135,000 home delivered meals each year and serves an additional 35,000 meals annually in dining room settings. Volunteer drivers not only deliver a hot, nutritious meal, but they provide a wellness check and a friendly visit. For many, this is the difference needed to maintain their dignity and independence at home.

NAIROBI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) Robust investment in food security and nutrition programs tailor-made for vulnerable demographics including children, women and the elderly is key to hastening Africa s recovery from COVID-19 related shocks, experts said.
The experts and policymakers who spoke at a virtual roundtable in Nairobi on Thursday evening said that robust action on Africa s malnutrition crisis worsened by the pandemic was a prerequisite in order to secure a sustainable future for communities. We need adequate financing and political goodwill in order to tackle malnutrition and childhood stunting that worsened during the pandemic amid restricted supply of food due to lockdowns, said Gladys Mugambi, Head of Nutrition Program in Kenya s Ministry of Health.
