North girls can’t hold on at Canterbury By CHUCK BALLARO - | Jan 13, 2021 Consistency is one of the most difficult things to find when you’re a young team, and when you don’t have a junior varsity program to learn to gain that consistency, it’s even harder. That’s the conundrum facing the North Fort Myers High School girls basketball team as it learns to play against varsity teams when JV experience may be in order. But even though they are 1-6, there are signs they are gaining some momentum, playing a very competitive game against Canterbury, building an eight-point halftime lead against a rebuilding team that reached states two years ago.

Cracker Day Rodeo to hold 60th annual show this weekend By CHUCK BALLARO - | Jan 13, 2021 For 60 years, the Cracker Day Rodeo has celebrated the tradition of working ranchers moving cattle throughout the state of Florida. This weekend, the Lee County Posse Arena, at 17401 Palm Creek Drive, will host one of Lee County’s longest-running events for the 60th time featuring three days of performances, including the annual Pee-Wee and Junior Rodeo on Friday. They have only missed 2018 in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. “We’re getting a big response. The kids really love getting their time in,” said Bobbi Harrison, adding that the rodeo serves as the biggest fundraiser for the arena, which allows Lee County kids a place to ride their horses.

America’s Boating Club to offer boating course By BOATING CLUB - | Jan 6, 2021 America’s Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva will present the America’s Boating Course in two sessions Jan. 14 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Jan. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sanibel Public Library. The course covers basic boat operation and safety with an emphasis on boating the local waters around Sanibel and Captiva. Among the topics reviewed are required safety equipment, boat handling, docking and anchoring, navigation, right of way rules, VHF radio operation, and handling emergency situations at sea. Students are introduced to boating the local waters by studying navigation charts for Pine Island Sound, San Carlos Bay and the Caloosahatchee River. Important destinations, channels and waterways are reviewed and advice for confidently boating in local waters is discussed.

This year’s event will be held on Jan. 23, and the bulk of the proceeds will be granted to human-needs based, island nonprofits to help people in need who deserve a helping hand. “The Sanctuary Golf Club’s members and the Sanibel-Captiva community have warmly embraced this event with their exceptional generosity and commitment to this fundraiser,” club Chief Operating Officer Ken Kouril said. “The Sanctuary Charity Classic allows opportunities for the membership to contribute and support our community.”
