Celebrate and learn about cultures from around the world through music, food and more. It’s Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. The Salem Farmers’ Market hosts Salem After Five. Enjoy a night of food, music and more. Grab dinner at Buddy’s BBQ food truck, while enjoying music by Gasoline Alley. Admission is $5 for adults. It Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Enjoy Opera on the James in Lynchburg. Bring a picnic while enjoying music from opera, Broadway and more. It’s Sunday at 5 p.m. at Point of Honor. Tickets are $35 with students getting in for $10.

On Saturday morning, instead of Elmwood Park, head to River’s Edge Park-North in Roanoke from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for this year’s festival. Local Colors has celebrated international diversity in Roanoke for the last 30 years and this year is no different. You can still enjoy food, displays, kids activities and other vendors from different countries but due to the pandemic it will be scaled back.

Arts & Extras: A taste of Southwest Virginia s Local Colors returns to Roanoke

The Local Colors Festival, somewhat scaled down but with food vendors present, resume in-person festivities on May 15. The Local Colors Festival, a prized Roanoke tradition that celebrates the valley’s cultural diversity, will take place in person May 15 at River’s Edge Park North. The free event will celebrate 30 years of showcasing Roanoke’s immigrant heritage. The very first festival, called Local Color, took place in 1991 and featured four countries. In the years that followed, under the leadership of Pearl Fu, Local Colors grew to an immense annual gathering that represents more than 50 nationalities and regularly attracts more than 20,000 people.
