As a child, it wasn’t Christmas until Eric Depradine’s grandmother uncorked her home-brewed hibiscus drink. Made from the vibrant magenta-colored tropical bloom, the drink had a tart cranberry-like flavor.
An immigrant from the village of Manzanilla on the island of Trinidad, Ena Depradine (pronounced deh-PRAH-deen) settled in Boston in the 1970s, and she brought with her knowledge of how to make a variety of fermented beverages using honey, fruits, flowers, herbs and spices.
D.G. Yuengling & Son is America s oldest craft brewery, having first poured frothy pints back in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Since that time they have remained a family business, passed down through generations, always father to son, until the fifth generation of all daughters who are now at the helm. Despite being the largest craft brewery by volume of sales in the United States, this brand has never been sold in Texas.
But that will all soon change. Last year the brewery formed The Yuengling Co., a joint venture with Molson Coors, and sometime this year will be brewed at the latter s Fort Worth facility and distributed throughout the state.

The week begins with pain and disappointment as many Kansas Citians come to terms with an unexpectedly lopsided loss in the Super Bowl. And it doesn’t help that all week we’ll be battling the worst weather of the season, with what feels like temperatures below zero.
Can you believe this? It’s not expected to get above freezing again in Kansas City until Friday of next week.
Is the gloomy weather a metaphor for what many of us will be feeling this week?
I was looking up what a loss in the Super Bowl means for the health of fans in the defeated city.
