Germany Takes Step Toward Autonomous Driving on Public Roads

Germany Takes Step Toward Autonomous Driving on Public Roads An almost fully autonomous electric mini bus in Monheim, Germany. (Andreas Rentz/Getty Images) German lawmakers agreed to allow some driverless vehicles on public roads, a first step toward enabling autonomous driving in Europe’s biggest economy. Lawmakers in the lower house of parliament adopted legislation enabling automated driving under some conditions. The bill, approved late May 20, cites scenarios including small buses and logistics vehicles that can shuttle passengers and goods along pre-determined routes. Next-level technologies hold the potential to enhance safety and efficiency in transportation, but it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to advance these ideas from concept to reality. We talk with Christoph Mertz of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon and Huei Peng of the University of Michigan. Climate change: EU official backs German Greens on curbing flights

BBC News Published image copyrightAFP The EU s top official on climate action has backed the German Greens call for tax and pricing changes to make rail travel more popular than flying. EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans said I support taxing kerosene like other fuels and nobody has to fly 10 or 12 times a year . He did not, however, back German Green Party leader Annalena Baerbock s call for a ban on short-haul flights. The Greens popularity has soared ahead of a September general election. In Germany, as in many other countries, jet fuel based on kerosene is exempt from energy taxes. Ms Baerbock is the Greens candidate to replace Angela Merkel of the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU) as chancellor. Mrs Merkel, now in her fourth term, became Germany s first woman chancellor in 2005, and is not running again.
