Ontario s Worst Roads Named; None In Our Region

CAA Only one road in Northwestern Ontario made the cut in the Canadian Automobile Association Worst Roads campaign. Tokio Street in Thunder Bay finished fifth in voting in the North and East districts. A total of 117 municipalities in Ontario saw roads in their communities nominated. Voters shared their primary reasons for selecting a road, with 81 per cent citing potholes or crumbling pavement, followed by traffic congestion (11 per cent) and no or poor walking infrastructure (7 per cent). Drivers accounted for most of the votes being cast, with cyclists and pedestrians accounting for about a quarter of the votes. Jeff Walker is President and CEO of CAA North and East Ontario and says, “The cost of poor roads isn’t just to commerce and trade, but as our Poor Roads study showed this year, they also cost Canadian motorists more than $3 billion a year in operating costs.”

Record Breaking Friday; Heat Warning Continues

Photo supplied by Signal Weather Services As predicted and expected a number of weather records were set Friday and a heat wave is moving through the region, putting most of the region under a heat warning from Environment Canada. Meteorologist Mark Schuster explains many areas saw record-breaking highs Friday, and forecasts highs in the 30s for “basically anywhere from about Kenora all the way towards Thunder Bay and up towards Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.” “It looks like these hot temperatures are going to persist into tomorrow,” he notes. The Red Lake and Ear Falls areas are under a special weather statement but have temperatures similar to those under the heat warning.

Key Step In Selection Of Underground Repository Set To Begin

Staff photo of consultations prior to COVID The next major step in the process of deciding whether a deep geological nuclear repository should be located in the Ignace area is about to be launched. The community will soon be embarking on willingness consultations to see if people want Ignace to stay involved in the site selection process or pull out. Mayor Penny Lucas says they hired a third party, independent consultant to carry out the work. Lucas says consultations will be through surveys and hopefully face-to-face meetings or small group sessions once COVID restrictions ease. She notes this stage is really two-fold.
