Language students build fluency with online international conversations | News

March 15, 2021 When Campbell classes moved online last year, Conversation and Composition Spanish classes faced a dilemma. Taught by Dr. René Ibarra an Associate, professor of Spanish in the Foreign Language Department, the classes rely heavily on student  conversations to build fluency. Not only was in-person interaction limited, but with a number of restrictions to travel, all Study Abroad plans came to a sudden stop, and the “Study in Spain Program” for summer 2021 was cancelled. These challenges prompted the question: What can we do to bring culture, and expose students to the Spanish language when we cannot travel or socialize on or even outside campus?  

UW Names Helfgott AVP for Global Engagement | News | University of Wyoming

March 11, 2021 Isadora Helfgott The chair of the University of Wyoming’s Department of History and American Studies has been named UW’s associate vice provost for global engagement. Isadora Helfgott oversees UW’s Global Engagement Office, created as part of UW’s strategic plan, which calls for expanded recruitment of international students and greater engagement of faculty and students in international education. She has held the position as an interim appointee since last summer. “Dr. Helfgott has demonstrated excellent leadership ability and vision in leading this office on an interim basis, and we’re excited that she will continue in this role without the ‘interim’ label,” Interim Provost Anne Alexander says.

UM Global Engagement opportunities adapt to pandemic restrictions

International travel has been suspended for University students for fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters. And even though abroad options for the summer and the 2021-2022 school year seem uncertain, the Global Engagement Office said UM will be making decisions as early as February.  “Per UM’s International Travel policy, UM will review the Department of State’s Travel Advisories and Centers for Disease Control Health Notices as the primary basis for decision-making, but will also look at factors such as the availability of vaccinations,” Marja Unkuri-Chaudry, the director of education abroad and partnerships at the Global Engagement Office stated in an email.

Three UW Students to Study Abroad Under U S State Department Program | News

December 10, 2020 Three University of Wyoming students recently received the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or work as interns abroad during the academic year. The students, including their hometowns, majors and where they will do their internships, are: Batavia, Ill. Carlee Simpson, a junior majoring in zoology, is participating in an internship program with Kaya Responsible Travel, an ethical travel company with a focus on volunteering abroad. Colorado Springs, Colo. Joanna Burgi, a sophomore majoring in social work and minoring in international studies, is participating in an international business and economics program through International Studies Abroad in Prague, Czech Republic.
