Police chief warns speeding drivers should not be treated more leniently than knife-wielding thugs

Speeding drivers are being treated more leniently than those caught carrying a knife, a top police officer has said.  Andy Cox, the national leader for fatal collision investigations, said those who drive at an extreme speed pose a greater threat to public safety.  The Detective Chief Superintendent said public attitudes and sentencing to road crime needs to change, according to The Sunday Times.  One of the highest speeds recorded by police was last year, where Metropolitan Police recorded a Porsche whizzing at 163mph on the M1 in Edgware, London.  The middle-aged man received a six-month driving ban, a fine and costs of £1,886 as a punishment.

Road Safety Partnership (RSP) South Africa supports UN Global Road Safety Week

May is traditionally when the UN marks the Global Road Safety Week. This year it will take place from 17 to 23 May 2021. The slogan for the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week is ‘Streets for life: why #Love30.’ The Road Safety Partnership (RSP) South Africa says the campaign is calling for 30km/h speed limits to become the norm in cities, towns and villages worldwide. “The RSP South Africa is pledging their support for the initiative. Low-speed limits in areas where traffic and people mix can significantly reduce the number of tragedies in these areas. “Low-speed streets save lives and should be the heart of all communities. The campaign acknowledges that not only will lives be saved but healthy and green streets can be created as well. #Love30 campaign calls for policymakers worldwide to move towards policy changes that enact a change to 30km/h speed limits in areas congested with traffic and people.”
