Greater New Bedford schools offer summer programming for students

Although all students in kindergarten through grade 12 have returned to full in-person learning since May 17, experts say students have lost an immeasurable amount of learning time in the past year-and-a-half due to hybrid and remote learning. While school routines may seem as normal as they can be for now, schools and districts are working hard to make sure students have the option to receive extra instruction during the summer. Summer programming in New Bedford  The New Bedford public school district will be holding summer programming at the elementary, middle and high school levels throughout the month of July. Academic support will be offered in the morning with a health and wellness focus in the afternoon. Remote academic support will be available for extenuating circumstances. Superintendent Thomas Anderson anticipates getting students outside as much as possible for afternoon activities and possibly even academic lessons, moving the classroom to an outdoors setting.

Collectively, in the past two weeks, numbers have varied. New Bedford reported the highest number of student cases since the week of Dec. 3 through Dec. 9, as the district reported 45 student cases. Acushnet reached its peak of three COVID-positive student cases, the second time they have reported as the highest number of cases. Dartmouth dropped down from the previously reported six student cases. Fairhaven reached its baseline of zero reported new cases.

VUSD quarantines 75-plus students See which schools are affected

Visalia Unified School District quarantined several classrooms in the wake of multiple students and staff testing positive for COVID-19.  Affected schools include Crestwood, Shannon Ranch, Annie R. Mitchell, Veva Blunt, and Willow Glen elementary schools, where overall 75 students were quarantined on Monday as a precaution. Teachers and aides will also be required to quarantine. Staffers tested positive for COVID-19 at Mountain View, Washington and Four Creeks on Jan. 19, the same day students returned from the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. No classrooms were quarantined, according to communications coordinator Kim Batty A non-VUSD classroom at Green Acres was also quarantined. A staff member for a Tulare County Office of Education program tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, according to spokesperson Rob Herman.
