What happened: Israeli leaders paid their respects to the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and sent condolences to the Royal Family ahead of his funeral at Windsor Castle this weekend.
In a letter to the Queen, President Reuven Rivlin described Prince Philip as “a man of honour and duty,” referencing his service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
The President noted Prince Philip’s visit to Israel in 1994, the first senior member of the Royal Family to do so, and recalled his speech at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. The Prince said, ‘We may dislike individual people, we may disagree with their politics and opinions, but that should never allow us to condemn their whole community simply because of the race or religion of its members … the Holocaust may be over, but there are altogether too many examples in the world today of man’s capacity for inhumanity.’ Rivlin n

The Crown’s fourth episode of season 3 opens in an unexpected location: 1967 Greece. We meet a fantastic older woman sporting a nun’s habit, toting a lit cigarette, and insisting (in Greek) that she’ll do whatever she can to keep her convent open. When the nun tries to sell a massive sapphire-and-diamond brooch to an Athens jeweler, he alerts the authorities, believing the item is stolen. Those authorities, in turn, discover the nun is actually Princess Alice of Battenberg, Prince Philip’s mother and Queen Elizabeth’s mother-in-law.

The day before, the commandant had demanded that all Jewish POWs among the 1,200-plus noncommissioned officers captured during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 present themselves outside their barracks the next morning. Edmonds, a master sergeant from Knoxville, Tennessee, was the group’s ranking officer. He ordered all the American POWs to stand in formation, like they did every morning.
