May 5th: World Portuguese Language Day celebrated in 50 countries – Portugal

Posted on 05 May 2021. The World Portuguese Language Day is being celebrated in 50 countries with more than 159 cultural activities worldwide. Portuguese is one of the few languages in the world with the status of a “global language” since it has more than 10 million speakers among the more than 7,000 living languages. This year, the Portuguese city of Guimarães has the honor to host the festivities with several themed cultural events taking place in the City Hall. Other events, in person and in virtual format, were organized by the University of Minho and taking place at the Centro Cultural Vila Flor. According to estimates, by the United Nations (UN), the Portuguese language is currently spoken by more than 260 million people on five continents, and is projected to be spoken in 2050 by about 400 million, and in 2100 by more than 500 million people.

Speaking at a press conference outlining the program of official commemorations of World Portuguese Language Day, Santos Silva said that progress had been made as Portuguese was already a working language in some UN organizations, like UNESCO. He pointed out the need to continue with the global promotion of Portuguese, considering it very important that, in addition to the work of the Camões Institute, the work of other countries’ Lusophone institutes, like the Brazil Cultural Network, and the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries’ International Institute of Portuguese Language (ILLP).

Lisbon’s first literary festival starts today with debates, music and cinema The first literary festival in Lisbon starts today and will run until the 9th, with debates, exhibitions, concerts and cinema, in various spaces of the city, bringing together more than 70 authors from eight countries, in a tribute to the Portuguese language. With the artistic direction of José Pinho, the International Festival of Literature and Portuguese Language - Lisbon 5L is an initiative of the Lisbon City Council (CML) to celebrate World Portuguese Language Day and promote language, literature, books, bookstores, reading, authors and their readers. The programming of the 5L Festival for the next five days will take place in different spaces ranging from the São Luiz theater to the Pharmacy Museum, passing through the Cineteatro Capitólio and the Cinema Ideal, as well as in Lisbon streets, bookstores, squares and squares.

Children s series at Central Congregational Church Pastor Doug Forbes will be sharing a series of children’s messages at the Central Congregational Church on Sundays at 10 a.m. The title of the series is Treasured, we are all treasured by God! At the conclusion of each message, the children will receive a new Bible Buddy toy or other keepsake.
