A former President of the Senate, Pius Anyim, has thrown his weight behind rotational presidency, saying Nigeria needs it to remain united.
He expressed confidence that the election of a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2023 was possible.
Anyim, also advocated constitutional backing for the existence of the nation’s six geo-political zones as well as devolution of powers to the federating units.
The former SGF made this position public during a lecture at the 6th World Igbo Summit at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, on Saturday.
He said, “Even though the zonal structure has not found legal backing, there is no gainsaying that it has assumed a moral force waiting to be constitutionalised.
Former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, has stated that a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2023 could only come to pass if the South East creatively and constructively engaged other regions.
According to the one-time Senate president, such engagement would engender confidence and create room for compromises. Anyim made the remarks at the weekend while delivering a keynote address during the sixth World Igbo Summit at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State.
In his lecture titled, “Identifying the political interest of the Igbo of South East geopolitical zone in Nigeria and strategies for its actualisation,” the ex-SGF maintained that the presidential ambition could not be a gift.

“Those who advocate for president of Nigeria of south-east extraction should diligently and boldly pursue it for the time has come, and the time is now”.
The above statement was made by a former Secretary to the government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim.
Anyim disclosed this at the 6th World Igbo Summit at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia state on Friday.
Recall that Ohanaeze Ndigbo and many other Igbo groups have continued to canvass for Igbo Presidency come 2023.
Citing Pius, TheCable said: “It is my opinion that the Igbo of the south-east geo-political zone is in continuous search of a system, or if you like, a polity that guarantees and secures his social, political and economic interest based on equality of citizenship, equity and justice. I make bold to say that the Igbo of the south-east geo-political zone can find this in Nigeria,” he said.
