ijji Carole Berry’s life has been interwoven with Devizes since she moved to the market town more than two decades ago. She became engrossed in community activities, joined the town council, and enjoyed a period as musical director at Wiltshire-based SuperChoir. After retiring, Carole tentatively began to write and submitted a manuscript to major publishers Austin Macauley. She was astonished when they sent her a glowing and encouraging review and the offer of a publishing contract! Times of My Life – A Forest Gate Girl, out next week, focuses on her life leading up to living in Wiltshire. A second book, The Best of Times details her adventures since.

Sister Joan Ann Springman, OSU, died peacefully at 11:45 am on Sunday, April 18th. She was born on February 24, 1934 at her home in Alton, Illinois; the youngest of eight children of Joseph J. and Elizabeth (Valerius) Springman. She had 5 brothers, Jerome V., Eugene E., Gerald J., Edmund J., and Joseph J.; and 2 sisters, Mary L. Girard and Delores T. Mills all of whom preceded her in death.
At the age of 19, she entered the Religious Order of Ursuline s on July 15, 1953, and made her Initial Profession of Vows on January 16, 1956 when she became known as Mother Mary Immaculata. She knew she wanted to be a religious from the time she was in the 2nd grade.

Irish composer and musician William Vincent Wallace was born in County Waterford on this day in 1812. As a child, he learned to play several instruments, excelling at both violin and piano. At eighteen, he began teaching piano at the Ursuline Convent, where he fell in love with–and eventually married–one of his students. He moved his family to Australia, and in 1836 they opened the first Australian music school in Sydney. After separating from his wife, he traveled the world, conducting Italian opera in Mexico, and helping to found the New York Philharmonic Society. Maritana, the first and most famous of Wallace’s six operas, premiered in at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1845.
