A bill co-sponsored by state Rep. TC Clements, R-Temperance, allowing more surviving children of police officers and fire fighters to be eligible for the Survivor Tuition Act was approved unanimously today by the Michigan House of Representatives.
The Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivor Tuition Act provides tuition waivers at Michigan community colleges or public universities for children and surviving spouses of Michigan police officers and fire fighters killed in the line of duty.
Under current law, students must demonstrate financial need in order to be eligible for the program. Clements contends that any student who lost a parent in the line of duty should be eligible.
