Reimagining Public Safety: PAD Initiative Expands Citywide In Atlanta

A diversion program that was created to provide an immediate alternative to arresting people committing violations commonly related to mental health needs, addiction, homelessness or extreme poverty is expanding. Moki Macias, the executive director of the Policing Alternatives & Diversion (PAD) Initiative, said since the start of the program last year, PAD has received additional funding from the City of Atlanta, conducted listening sessions, conducted a survey as well as reviewed data analysis of arrests and calls of service and PAD is now expanding to all community Zones in Atlanta. “Our work exposes on some level, where we need, where there’s more work to do to make sure we that we are building the kind of systems that really serve people,” explained Macias.

African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Awards Five Georgia-Based Organizations With Funding To Preserve Black Landmarks

The top leader of a fund that was created to preserve African American landmarks, says he hopes that the nation understands the connection between architecture and racial justice, as well as the importance of telling a fuller story. Brent Leggs, the executive director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, was a guest on Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look.” He talked with show host Rose Scott about the history and mission of the fund and a new grant that will help preserve several Black landmarks across the nation. “We are announcing $3 million in 40 projects and about $300,000 of that is supporting five projects in Georgia,” explained Leggs.
