Former Barnardsville native and veteran honored on monument

It's one of the biggest aviation mysteries of the Vietnam War era. Nearly 60 years later, for surviving family members of Flying Tiger Line Flight 739, there's still no closure. Ninety-three U. S. Army soldiers and 11 crew members remain missing. Among them, a Western North Carolina soldier. Little has been done to honor their service until recently. Remembering Billy Atkins. Vaccine bus takes doses to Del communities with least access

WHYY By Dr. Rick Pescatore fires off a series of questions to each person who sits before him, after they wait in the hallway of the Rose Hill Community Center south of Wilmington. Are they allergic to anything? Do they take blood thinners? Have they been vaccinated within the last 14 days? Once his queries are answered to his satisfaction, Pescatore instructs each patient to roll up their sleeve, aims a needle at their arm, injects them with their first dose of the two-shot Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, and directs them to the observation room to be monitored for adverse reactions. Committee taking 2nd shot at school renaming has new list of 10

Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The advisory committee taking a second shot at naming the newly merged Community Public Charter School middle school and Murray High School has released a list of ten names under consideration. Those names will be on a community survey next month. This committee started its work last May, and after a similar community process decided on the name Rose Hill Community School. While the intent of that name was to reflect the neighborhood the school is in as well as honor Asalie Preston who taught at what was once the Rose Hill School. However, some residents protested that choice after it was made saying it was also the name of the plantation where the current neighborhood sits. In July, the committee decided to reopen the process… which has been delayed by the pandemic.
