No quick fix to tackling rising child obesity in district

No quick fix to Bradford s rising childhood obesity rates | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

A BRADFORD public health expert said there is “no quick fix” to tackle the rising problem of childhood obesity in the city - and the Covid-19 crisis has made it worse.  Latest figures show children are more likely to be obese when they leave Bradford’s primary schools than they were a decade ago. And a new report from Public Health England (PHE) looking back over the last 10 years has concluded there is a strong link between obesity and the poorest areas in the country. NHS Digital data shows 28 per cent of Year 6 pupils in Bradford were classed as obese in 2019-20, up from 20 per cent in 2009-10.

Join the move to get active for 20 minutes a day

Fozia and Hanna cycle round Lister Park, Majid Ahmed walks to get his neighbour’s shopping, while Deborah and Ross Reynolds have fun dancing around their kitchen. They are all taking part in an uplifting campaign across Bradford and the surrounding areas to get people off their sofas and moving. They are being encouraged to join the 20 Minute Movement to help them feel fitter and healthier. Launched by Living Well, an initiative led by Bradford Council’s department of public health and NHS Bradford and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group (CGC) to reduce preventable ill health, a team listened to more than 1,800 residents and 36 different health-related organisations, to understand what living well meant to them.
