Bird flu in Maharashtra: 161 birds, including 129 poultry birds, found dead

A total of 161 birds, including 129 poultry birds, were found dead due avian influenza in Maharashtra. The samples have been sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal and Disease Investigation Section, Pune.
Since the outbreak in Maharashtra on January 8, a total of 19,238 deaths of various birds has been recorded. The positive samples for avian influenza were detected in peacocks in Arvi tehsil and Yavatmal district and an owl from Hangarga in Naygaon tehsil, Nanded district.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, the process of declaring the âinfected zonesâ has started in places wherever positive reports of poultry birds and ducks were found. Besides, the local administration has initiated the implementation of preventive measures. Mohali (Punjab) [India], January 27 (ANI): The ongoing avian influenza has been confirmed at a poultry farm in Punjab Dera Bassi, District Collector of Mohali informed on Wednesday.
Samples that were collected in the farm as part of the ongoing surveillance were sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal and the bird flu was confirmed. Culling will be done as per norms, the district collector said. Meanwhile, the central government stated that so far nine states have confirmed Bird Flu in poultry birds and 12 states have confirmed the virus in crow, migratory and wild birds.

Chicken and eggs are safe for consumption if cooked properly, says Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department
The Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department and the District administration are holding chicken and egg festivals in various districts so as to dispel myths of bird flu, said State Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Sachindra Pratap Singh.
Singh told
BusinessLine that the festivals are held so that false news about bird flu and poultry products consumption could be dispelled. An aggressive information campaign has been launched so that the income of 20 lakh poultry farmers does not get affected. Chicken and eggs are the cheapest sources of protein and if properly cooked they are safe for human consumption.
