An Invercargill man has walked free after nearly nine months in jail on a manslaughter conviction 27 July 2021
The Otago Daily Times reports Taine Edwards sentence has been quashed by Justice Cameron Mander in the High Court at Invercargill today.
Edwards was found guilty last year for charges, including manslaughter by inciting reckless driving before the crash in which nurse Emma Bagley died.
He was sentenced to two years and six months behind bars.
But his lawyer appealed the conviction - and a new witness told the Court of Appeal in May Edwards had discouraged the driver getting in the car that night.

Invercargill City Council chief executive Clare Hadley said the legal proceedings could stretch into next year, or longer. [File photo]. The case between the council and Shadbolt was set down for February 8, 2021. Hadley expected the matter would now progress well into next year and maybe beyond, although she was unsure exactly how long it would take to sort. A hearing will be held in August where Hadley expected it would be decided whether the council and Riskpool matters would be dealt with separately in court, or both together. The council had spent $165,000 to date on legal costs, but Hadley said much of that work was now not relevant given Riskpool has now been included in the amended pleadings.
