Accrington: warning that town centre is slipping into the abyss

A VETERAN Conservative politician has warned that urgent action is needed to stop a town centre slipping into the abyss . Cllr Peter Britcliffe told Hyndburn Full Council that the middle of Accrington could not wait for a hoped for injection of millions of pounds of government cash. He highlighted the weed-ridden state of plants in the Market Square as an exampled of why steps to improve the area were needed now. The St Andrew s ward borough and Oswaldtwistle county councillor was speaking as Hyndburn Full Council debated the six-month extension of a 52.5 per cent cut in rests for traders in Accrington Market Hall.

THE owners of a shopping centre have spoken after development plans caused controversy with local traders. ESTAMA UK which owns the Newgate Shopping Centre in Bishop Auckland has responded to recent criticism to plans to move the Job Centre into three retail units. The Department of Work and Pensions submitted a planning application to Durham County Council to move the Job Centre in the Newgate Centre. The units would be merged to create the new Job Centre, however in doing so one of the entrances to the centre will have to be blocked off, in order to join the retail units up, cutting off Fore Bondgate.
