Uber has received tax credit from HMRC despite being locked in a dispute over whether the company should be classed as a transportation provider, which campaigners claim could see it forced to pay £1.5bn in VAT.
The ride-hailing company s UK business disclosed a £132,000 tax credit in 2019, after adjustments from previous years and share-based awards. Uber’s UK revenues increased in 2019 to £82.5m from £68.4m and its profits increased to £6.2m from £5.7m.
The tax rebate came after Uber made an advance payment to HMRC, ahead of the 2019 financial year. After the company s float in May 2019, it also began charging a tax deduction on share-based compensation, cutting its tax liability to zero.
