Ex-Faridpur AL leader Barkat, his brother Rubel amassed Tk 2,535cr illegally, backed by Khandaker Mohtesam Babar: CID probe
Former Faridpur Awami League leader Sajjad Hossain alias Barkat and his brother Imtiaz Hasan alias Rubel amassed Tk 2,535.11 crore beyond their known sources of income, a CID probe has found.
They did so under the shelter and with assistance of at least eight other accused in a money laundering case, including Khandaker Mohtesam Hossain Babar, brother of former minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, according to the probe by the Criminal Investigation Department.
Of the ill-gotten wealth, only Tk 9.75 crore was found in the bank accounts of Barkat, ex-general secretary of Faridpur town AL unit, and his brother Rubel, who was the president of Faridpur Press Club.

Police have rescued a two-year-old from Sonabaria village in Satkhira s Kolaroa upazila three days after the child was abducted by a woman pretending to be an NGO worker.
The child, Tasin, was returned to the parents, said Uttam Kumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Bagachara police outpost.
Salma Khatun (23) and Lutfar Gazi (55) were arrested on suspicion of their involvement in the incident, the police official said.
On January 20, Salma Khatun, identifying herself as an NGO worker, went to Tasin s house and told the parents that they are eligible for a pregnancy card which would give them Tk 30,000 at a time.

Awami League s Faridpur town unit organising secretary Jafar Iqbal Haroon Mandal was shown arrested today in a Tk 2,000 crore money laundering case.
Jafar is also cousin of Sajjad Hossain alias Barkat, the principal accused of the case and also former general secretary of AL s Faridpur town unit.
Metropolitan Magistrate Masud Ur Rahman passed the order after Uttam Kumar Biswas, assistant superintendent of police of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a prayer for showing him arrested in the case.
