Annual General Meeting
Thanks to the magic of Microsoft Teams, over 40 members based in bedrooms and backrooms, attics and alcoves, kitchens and sitting rooms, men s sheds and living rooms scattered across Mullingar (Who was the furthest from town?) participated in the Mullingar Shamrocks Annual General Meeting on Friday night, 15 January 2021.
It was a historic occasion and worked wonderfully well. Full marks to secretary Aidan O Donoghue who choreographed the occasion to perfection. One member, and an executive member at that, confessed to having an alcoholic beverage during the 75 minutes of the meeting but that is alright too. It was only one and we live in extrordinary times. Secretary Aidan O Donoghue opened the meet and in his report referenced 2020 as a testing, trying and difficult year. A year like no other and one that will livelong in the memories of Shamrocks members due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus .
Looking back through the Professional Planner archives, it’s striking to note how many of the same themes present themselves; the quest for professionalism, fee models and the compliance burden were issues as vexing then as they remain today.
The industry has come a long way since 2010, however. Technology took a giant leap with the advent of managed accounts and full-service platforms, but lagged in the area of client relationship management; has Xplan really changed?
More importantly, the FoFA reforms, the education mandate and the ongoing rollout of reforms stemming from the Hayne Royal Commission have dragged the industry in the right direction. There is still a long way to go, and a lot would argue that some of the steps taken over the last decade have seen the industry go backwards. But little by little, advice is growing closer to something resembling its final form.

Amalgamated Life’s Dunkin Becomes RIMS President for 2021 January 8, 2021
The risk management society RIMS announced that Ellen R. Dunkin will lead the organization as president for the 2021 term, which began January 1.
Dunkin is the senior vice president, general counsel and chief risk officer for Amalgamated Life Insurance Co. in White Plains, New York. She has more than 25 years of experience driving strategic and enterprise risk management programs, as well as overseeing legal initiatives for companies including Crump Group; Marsh & McLennan Companies and Willkie Farr & Gallagher.
From 1998–2007, Dunkin was employed by RIMS, serving as general counsel and director of Government Affairs. She has been a member of RIMS for nearly 15 years and was actively involved with RIMS New York chapter, serving as its president from 2015 to 2016.
