As the fight over demolition costs of an historic downtown building continues, the price for the owner is falling – slightly.
The City of Battle Creek is seeking payment from Bryant DeBolt for demolition costs of the Binder Building.
The 120-year-old, six-story sandstone tower at 34 W. Michigan Ave. was demolished in December after the city determined it might collapse and was a danger.
It was declared a nuisance and after a hearing, Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Lincoln permitted the city to proceed with demolition.
The city is now seeking payment from DeBolt for the costs of removing the tower and making some repairs to the remaining structure, which DeBolt has owned since 1987 and is using it for storage.
Horrocks To Move From Downtown Battle Creek
Horrocks Farm Market is probably moving out of downtown Battle Creek. City Development Director John Hart confirmed that he was notified of the move in a phone call from owner Kirk Horrocks this week.

Battle Creek Explores A Roundabout at North Ave And Emmett Street
The city of Battle Creek continues to explore the possibility of building a roundabout at the intersection of North Avenue and Emmett Street. In spite of efforts to make the intersection safer, (prohibiting right turns on red and adding a crosswalk at Emmett and College) those efforts didn t prevent a fatal crash occurred at that site in October of 2018.
In the aftermath of the fatal 2018 accident, the city hired an advisory firm to make suggestions, both short and long term, to add safety to the area. The short term suggestions have been implemented. Those include, according to the city, sign reduction and sign placement improvements, bus stop relocation, and traffic signal back plate installation.
