Having heat has quickly turned from a luxury into a necessity this week.
At the Conscious Community Co-op in Edmond, co-owner Jennifer Webster said during a 12-hour period on Tuesday, they had to fill up their propane tank three times to accommodate the demand.
The daily farmer’s market’s bread and butter is generally their food sales, but since Sunday, they have been filling propane tanks for free, with nearly 100% of it fueled by community donations.
People have come from as far away as Tulsa since so many places are out of propane.
“To have these people, when you fill their propane, you go, ‘It’s OK, it’s free.’ Grown men, breaking down in tears, going, ‘I haven’t worked in two weeks, I have no food, no money, Webster said. Literally people these last few days have been choosing between heat and hunger.”
