USQ Stands Against Utah House Bills for Gender-Based Discrimination

March 10, 2021 Last summer, US Quidditch (USQ) showed support for the LQBTQIA+ community; now, the organization is showing its support and speaking out against two new bills in Utah. The Utah House of Representatives passed House Bill 302 (HB0302), on “Preserving Sports for Female Students,” on February 17. This bill: requires schools and local education agencies to  designate athletic activities by sex; prohibits a student of the male sex from participating in an athletic activity designated for female students; The main problem is that it excludes transgender girls from any female sport at public schools. According to the bill, transgender youth should participate in school athletic activities designated for either “male” or “female” students according to the sex assigned to them at birth.

Utah House committee rejects bill that would have prevented some medical procedures on transgender minors Mangoman88 / Wikipedia and last updated 2021-02-19 13:53:19-05 SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s House Health and Human Services Committee has rejected House Bill 92, which would have prohibited doctors from performing certain types of procedures—including gender reassignment surgery—on minors. House Bill 92, which was described as a Medical Practice Amendment, will not move forward. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Rex Shipp, R-Cedar City, in the House, and Sen. Curt Bramble in the Senate, both of whom are considered very conservative legislators. The bill has a long list of medical definitions and would have added several procedures to the “unprofessional conduct” statute including “unnecessary puberty inhibitions” or “sex characteristic-altering procedures” for those under 18 years old.

Rep Dunnigan is pushing to establish a respite care center for Utah s homeless population - State of Reform

Representative Jim Dunnigan is hoping to give homeless Utahns “a chance for a better life” with a bill he is sponsoring this session. Dunnigan’s HB 34, which recently passed through the Utah House Health and Human Services Committee, would create a respite care program for homeless Utahns.  According to Dunnigan, these individuals frequently cycle in and out of care settings. The respite care program aims to address this issue by establishing a place for homeless individuals to continue to receive treatment and recover after they are released from the emergency room.     Hospitals would be able to contact the respite care center when they believe a homeless patient is ready to leave the emergency room to coordinate a transfer to the care center.
