HB197 is the brainchild of Rep. Jordan Teuscher, R-West Jordan. The freshman lawmaker wants to restrict party-switching by voters by delaying a change made in an even-numbered year until after the June primary. “This is about the integrity of the process. Anyone can register with whichever party they choose, but if they want to switch their registration right before the primary based on who the candidates are, it would prevent that,” he said.

SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Democratic Party on Saturday announced its selection to fill the seat left open by the death of Ogden Rep. LaWanna Lou Shurtliff. Retired obstetrician-gynecologist and U.S. Air Force veteran Dr. Rosemary Lesser will serve in the House District 10 seat after state delegates chose her out of eight candidates, the party said in a statement. Before her retirement last year, Lesser practiced medicine at the Ogden Women s Clinic, Ogden Regional Medical Center and McKay-Dee Hospital. She served for 15 years as an obstetrician-gynecologist in the Air Force and served surgical missions in Mali, West Africa, according to the Democratic Party.

LaWanna Lou Shurtliff s term after the latter s death in December. According to a news release, the Utah Democratic State Party held a special election Saturday for Utah House District 10, which was vacated by the passing of Rep. Shurtliff in December. Dr. Rosemary Lesser was selected by state delegates to serve the remainder of Shurtliff s term after the ballots were counted. Dr. Lesser is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who has practiced at Ogden Women s Clinic, Ogden Regional, and McKay-Dee hospitals. She has 15 years of service as an OB/GYN physician in the U.S. Airforce, and completed several surgical missions to Mail, West Africa, according to her biography. Lesser has been active in the Weber County Democratic and Utah State Democratic Parties.
