With Memorial Day looming and summer vacation travel not far behind, public land managers and the Colorado tourism industry are bracing for another summer of crowded trails, overflowing parking lots and likely damage to recreation resources.
Outdoor recreation in the state has grown steadily over the past decade, but following a year that saw an explosive surge driven by the pandemic, there are no signs that that trend is going to reverse.
“All the indices within the tourism industry, the travel industry, are telling us people are coming and lots of them,” said Scott Fitzwilliams, supervisor of the White River National Forest. “If it’s anything like last year and many predictions are that it will be more than last year we expect a lot of people on the forest.”
The Staaten is open for catered affairs. But when will its restaurant reopen for lunch?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. With Memorial Day a few weeks away, Army veteran Lee Covino said it felt good to be back at the The Staaten for United Staten Island Veterans Organization (USIVO) functions. He and the group wanted to make sure the West Brighton catering hall felt the love and they honored its LiGreci family owners with a plaque at its Night of Honor earlier this week.

Cyr, on a call with other members of Cape Cod s COVID-19 response task force, voiced confidence that the Cape will be a safe place to visit this summer. While a year ago many were wondering how big a hit the region s tourist economy would take, Cyr said the region s workforce shortage now has reached a crisis level.
He encouraged potential tourists to be patient and tap into that kindness that was so evident at the beginning of the pandemic, cautioning that a limited number of workers means it may take a little more time to get that ice cream cone, a little more time to get that fish sandwich.
