Zenith has revived a collector-favourite chronograph from the early 1970s, one that brings together the two most recognised elements of the early El Primero chronographs.
In the earliest days of Zenith’s El Primero chronograph, the groundbreaking model was available in two distinct styles; one with classic round cases and those iconic tri-color sub dials, such as the A386, and the other, like the A384, in more modern, tourneau-shaped cases.
The A3817, which dropped in 1971, brought together both of those elements for the first time but, with only 1,000 pieces, the model remains a rarity.
The Chronomaster Revival A3817 has been reverse-engineered using the original blueprints to “preserve the original proportions and finishes.” Like the original, the new watch features a white lacquered dial and sub dials in shades of grey and blue.

In the latest iteration of the Defy – which, as you might recall, really has no dial at all – the brand has given its modern El Primero 21 chronograph movement a colorful PVD treatment coupled with a matching gem-set bezel and rubber strap in five bold hues, offering an entirely new approach to vivid, kinetic vibrance. Each tone – green, orange, blue, purple, and black – is available in a limited edition run of just 10 watches, forming the new Defy Spectrum collection.

Last week, I showed you a bargain bin Zenith El Primero with the Epervier model name. Despite the incredible movement and inspirational pricing, this child of the late ’80s fell to a 57% Crying Shame loss. One day, when pleated pants make a proper return (not that half-baked attempt that the fashion industry is trying now), you’ll wish you’d bought this chrono. Oh well: we move onwards and upwards. If the Epervier represented the end of one of my favorite eras in hair and hair band music, today’s Minerva Pythagore Edition 2001 represents the last efforts of a company on its deathbed.

969 was certainly a year to remember for Zenith and would go down in the annals of watchmaking history as the year that forever changed the chronograph. It was the year that the Zenith El Primero, the world’s first automatic high-frequency chronograph, was unveiled to the world. It made its debut in three distinct stainless steel models. Among them was the A385, a tonneau-shaped steel chronograph with an eye-catching brown gradient dial, which was the first âsmokedâ dial ever to be made in the watch industry and for Zenith.
