UPDF admits to battering journalists, asks to settle case out of court

The Uganda People s Defense Forces (UPDF) has asked the High court in Kampala to allow them to settle out of court a case in which they were sued over battering journalists earlier this year.
City lawyer Steven Kalali sued the government on behalf of journalists for battering several journalists on February 22, 2021, who d gone to cover National Unity Platform former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi as he delivered a petition to the United Nations High Commission in Kololo challenging gross human rights violations in the country.
The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) President, Matthias Rukundo tells KFM that over the years, journalists have been attacked while in line of duty by security personnel, leaving many seriously injured and unable to practise their profession.
He says for this to be stopped, there is need for a collaborative move from journalists themselves and stakeholders to strongly the brutal attacks meted on them.

Police have started investigating the murder by shooting of Robert Kagolo, a UBC journalist which occurred last night at around 8pm at Bugembejembe village, Wakiso District.
The Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says it is alleged, that, while Kagolo was returning from the village after his brother’s burial, he hurriedly entered the late’s home which was being guarded by LDU personnel after he suspected that some people were following him and he knocked the gate with his motor vehicle while gaining entrance .

Star FM news editor and the former president of Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) Robert Kagolo has been shot dead.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said that Kagolo was killed by a Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel identified as Rashid Mamuli who was guarding the home of Kagolo’s brother at Kasengeje village in Wakiso district on Thursday at around 8:00 pm.
LDU personnel were deployed to guard Kagolo’s brother, Samuel Musiitwa, who, on Monday this week reportedly caught redhanded his wife sleeping with another man.
