Four Area Wrestlers Find the Podium at State

Schlabaugh and Thompson Lead Class 1A Grapplers in Day Two

Day two of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament is a wrap and a pair of Class 1A area wrestlers have secured a spot on the podium in Des Moines.  Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh and Bryce Thompson had a pair of wins on Friday to keep their season alive. Schlabaugh opened the day at 106 lbs in the second round consolation match with a 5-2 decision victory over Easton Kroll of Wapsie Valley and then turned around for a 4-2 win over Mount Ayr’s Drew Ehlen to move to 3-1 in the tournament. Thompson started the morning in the winners bracket at 113 lbs, but dropped a 5-2 decision to Donovan Hanson of West Bend in the quarterfinals. The senior bounced back for 11-3 and 4-3 wins over Colfax-Mingo’s Noah Strohmeyer and Don Bosco’s Andrew Kimball to advance to day three at Wells Fargo Arena.

Eight Area Wrestlers Ready For Day Two at State

Out of an initial field of 11 wrestlers from the KCII listening area, eight remain as the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines moves to day two. Four grapplers moved through Thursday’s day one with wins to stay in the championship bracket including Mid-Prairie’s Cael Garvey at 195lbs, Columbus’ Lane Scorpil at 113lbs and Chance Malone at 285lbs and Highland’s Bryce Thompson at 113lbs. Four other wrestlers dropped their opening match on Thursday but rebounded to win a second match and stay alive in the tournament’s consolation bracket. They include Washington’s Ayden Frazer at 182lbs, Mid-Prairie’s Josh Wallington at 220lbs, Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh at 106lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux at 170lbs.
