“We become quite frozen by fear about being right or being wrong. We’re looking to others for approval.” Kemp no longer takes on clients for residential interior design, but continues to work self-employed as a commercial designer and content creator. Her Instagram account, where she describes herself as a “maximalist mastermind and interiors rebel”, has 24,000 followers. She has an ongoing partnership as a Dulux colour ambassador.

Designer Evie Kemp’s new book is available only as a digital download. While the book features a lot of Kemp’s “more is more” colourful design, she recognises that what she calls maximalist decor is not for everybody.

Our five favourite eyeliners: l-r, Smashbox Always Sharp Eyeliner in Violetta, $37; Fenty Beauty Flyliner in Cuz I’m Black, $38; Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, $37; Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Corrupt, $39; Lancome Artliner, No1 Noir (Black), $66.
When I first stated using make-up, one of the first things I learned to do was a sharp slash of eyeliner. That was back in the 80s, when the rage was for lining your eye in a thick smear of black kohl and then spending the rest of the night trying not to blink it all over your eyelid. Grim times.
Evie Kemp and Woven Earth introduced a wealth of colour and fun to this converted garage playroom at the Te Whānau Rangimarie women s refuge in Auckland. Video by Show and Tell
Designer Evie Kemp recently helped complete an interior makeover with a difference – she was contacted by the charity Woven Earth and asked to help transform a very plain double garage at the Te Whānau Rangimarie women’s refuge safe house in Auckland. The garage is used as a playroom-second living area at the house, which can accommodate up to 19 women and children who have escaped domestic violence. But it was in desperate need of a little love and attention.
There are kitchens that win awards, and then there are the others. An award-winning kitchen is usually high-end (think expensive materials and extra-large island), and not something most of us can even dare to dream about, although it’s fun to look. We can often take ideas from these kitchens, even if it’s just a detail we particularly admire. In compiling this list of six top kitchens for 2020 we have included both high-end award winners and finalists, but we have also included a colourful DIY kitchen that didn’t cost a bomb, but looks a million dollars.
